Decision Maps

The process of making decisions is flawed...

How many meetings have you been to where the group intents to make a decision? Instead this happens.

  • Everyone vents, no one listens
  • Brainstorming is dominated by a central character
  • The quite people never have a chance to contribute
  • There is no structure
  • Ultimately, a decision is made and after a month no one can remember why

We want to solve this. We believe that with a simple process a team can generate a decision map which will show all the options and consequences. Once a decision is made this map can be revisited by the team to remember why they are doing what they are doing.

How far along is this idea?

We have have built some simple prototypes but need to take a few months to really focus on it and produce something we can test with teams.

Why this idea?

It is fundamental to solve this problem so that our society can advance. In the future we should at least remember why certain decisions were made so that we know what we are undoing when we change them.

Non Profit Hub

We want to make Non-Profits more effective...

I don't like donating to non-profits because I know they will want to find me again when they need more money. It's a stupid reason, I know it. But, still I know that I'm doing it and I imagine I'm not the only one.

I see the value in organizations that are not profit driven. I believe this is an important type of organization that has nobel reasons for existing. But, I just cannot handle the door knocking, phone call, pledge drives, people lurking in front of grocery stores.

You know you avoid them too.

Wouldn't it be nice to donate to a non-profit anonymously? Something in the middle that will bill your credit card regularly and then distribute it to a portfolio of non-profits. Then at tax time it just sends you the correct forms with the correct amounts.

Wouldn't it be nice to build a portfolio of non-profits? Judge them on how they are using the money and what they are trying to accomplish.

As a non-profit wouldn't it be nice to just get money? We realize you want to know who is sending you money but it really should be up to that person when they want to revile themselves.

This is a product that should exist but we need a patron to help us push it along.

How far along is this idea?

It is an idea that has been bubbling around our collective conscious for a while. So we have lots of thoughts on the project.

Why this idea?

We believe that non-profits are that super important organizations that lets us change the world in a positive way. But, the financing of them is flawed because of a design issue. Basically people hesitate to donate because they don't want to be bothered. This can be fixed.

It started when...

We were working on a startup idea called Chirpsy. It was a twitter ghost writer service that would make new tweets for users. The problem was that we then had to generate twitter tweets. We decided to use Amazon's Mechanical Turk Service and have workers around the world do it for us.

Then we found the real problem. How do you manage all of these folks to make sure you get quality results? It was a very big problem because it simply didn't scale to review every workers work.

My co-founder, Isaac Nichols, had an idea. It involved having the workers grade each other and level up. Based on level, they would be able to do more and make more money. It took us several years and several iterations but ultimately we produced a system that managed more than 500,000 tasks with very high quality results.  The best part was that we did not have to manage them.

So why can't this same proven methodology be used for high skilled tasks? We want to take this same system and apply it to high skilled tasks. Instead of simple data review tasks, we can have architect, doctors, and lawyers do complex high skilled tasks. It can be done in private company databases, it can be run to manage overseas workforces. It is the most scalable way to manage work.

Why this idea?

This makes work simpler for companies and employees. It allows a latent workforce of stay at home professionals to participate. Ultimately it make the world a better place by separating employment from your career. We see a future where you select tasks, get paid, and grow your reputation. This advancement removes the waste that we have grown accept in the way we do jobs.
